Testing and Assessment FAQs

If there are grades, how will they be determined?

The Oregon Virtual Academy is a mastery-based program, which means students master concepts and lessons before moving on to the next lesson. Students will be required to submit assignments to their teachers for evaluation and feedback. Teachers will assess mastery and provide quantitative feedback in the secondary grades.

What tests are required as part of the program?

Star360 Assessments will be administered throughout the school year, varying by grade level. These assessments are adaptive, which means they adjust to each answer the student provides. Star Assessments allow teachers to assess student growth throughout the school year!

In addition to K12 lesson, unit, and semester assessments, ORVA students in grades 3–8 and grade 11 will take the Oregon Smarter Balance (SBAC).

Do I have to participate in state testing?

The Oregon Department of Education requires that all public schools administer the SBAC to students in grades 3-8 and 11. Your participation in the State Assessment is important for your school to stay compliant with these state standards and remain open to serve future families. Oregon Department of Education does allow for families to opt-out students from the English Language Arts and Math portions of the SBAC, but not the Science portion for grades 5,8 and 11. Opt-outs must be submitted on the state opt-out form which you can find below (New forms may not be available from the state at the beginning of the school year and will be updated when they become available). The opt-out form must be filled out annually and submitted to the Testing Coordinator or other staff member. For more information on how opting out could affect your student or school, please contact your Principal or Testing Coordinator.
